1. "What almost stopped you from signing up?"

When to ask: Immediately after signup (on the thank-you or welcome page)

Format: Open text

Why it works: People who just signed up are in a reflective mood. They overcame hesitation to take action, and that hesitation is fresh in their minds. This question catches friction while it's still memorable.

What you'll learn: The real objections your marketing doesn't address. Common answers include pricing confusion, unclear product scope, trust concerns ("I wasn't sure if this was legit"), and missing information ("I couldn't find if you integrate with X").

What to do with it: After 50-100 responses, you'll see patterns. The top 3 objections become your FAQ section, your homepage copy improvements, and your next A/B test priorities.

Tip

Don't change this to "Why did you sign up?" - that gives you compliments, not insights. You want to hear about the friction, not the motivation.


2. "How would you describe us to a colleague?"

When to ask: After 2-4 weeks of active use (time-delayed trigger for returning visitors)

Format: Open text

Why it works: This reveals your positioning in your customers' own language. Not what you think your product is - what they think it is. The gap between these two is where your messaging problems live.

What you'll learn: Whether your value proposition lands as intended. If you describe yourself as "an on-site survey tool" but users say "that little popup thing for feedback," you have a messaging opportunity.

What to do with it: Use their exact language in your marketing. If 30 people independently describe you as "the simple alternative to Hotjar," that's your headline, not whatever you brainstormed in a meeting.


3. "What's the one thing we should improve?"

When to ask: After meaningful product usage (e.g., 5+ sessions, or after completing a key workflow)

Format: Open text with optional star rating first

Why it works: "The one thing" forces prioritization. Without the constraint, people either write novels or nothing. With it, they tell you what matters most to them - which is what matters most to you.

What you'll learn: Your product's biggest weakness from the people who use it. Not from churned users (who are gone), not from prospects (who haven't tried it) - from active users who care enough to answer.

What to do with it: Group the answers into themes. If 40% mention the same area, that's your next sprint. If answers are scattered, your product is probably fine - no single thing is broken.


4. "Was this page helpful?"

When to ask: On documentation, help articles, and knowledge base pages (after 30+ seconds on page)

Format: Yes/No with optional follow-up text

Why it works: It's binary, instant, and low-friction. One click. But the follow-up question ("What were you looking for?") on "No" answers is where the gold is.

What you'll learn: Which docs are confusing, outdated, or missing information. A page with 60% "No" needs rewriting. A page with 95% "Yes" is fine - move on.

What to do with it: Prioritize doc rewrites by unhelpfulness score. The pages with the most traffic AND highest "No" rates are your biggest wins. Fix those first.


5. "What's holding you back?"

When to ask: On pricing pages (exit intent trigger) or after 3+ visits without converting

Format: Multiple choice with these options:

  • Pricing is too high
  • I need a feature you don't have
  • I'm not sure it works with my setup
  • I'm comparing alternatives
  • Just browsing for now

Why it works: People on pricing pages are in buying mode. If they're leaving without buying, knowing why is worth more than almost any other data point. Multiple choice makes it frictionless - one click, done.

What you'll learn: Whether your barrier is price, features, trust, or timing. Each requires a completely different response. "Pricing is too high" and "I'm comparing alternatives" are different problems with different solutions.

Why it works: This is the Sean Ellis product-market fit test. If 40%+ say "very disappointed," you have product-market fit. Below 40%, you have work to do.

What you'll learn: Whether people need your product or just like it. The difference matters. "Nice to have" products churn. "Must-have" products grow.

What to do with it: Track this number monthly. If it's below 40%, ask the "very disappointed" segment what they love most, and double down on that. Don't try to please the "not disappointed" crowd - focus on the people who already can't live without you.

Always follow up with "What is the main benefit you get from this product?" The combination of PMF score + stated benefit tells you exactly what to emphasize in your positioning.


7. "How easy was it to [complete specific action]?"

When to ask: Immediately after a key workflow (checkout, onboarding, setup, first project creation)

Format: Emoji scale (5 faces from frustrated to delighted) or 1-5 star rating

Why it works: Timing is everything. This catches the experience while the user is still in it. An email survey 3 days later gets "it was fine, I guess" - a survey right after gets "the third step was confusing because..."

What you'll learn: Exactly where your UX breaks down. Not which page - which step. If everyone rates checkout as 2/5, you know the problem. Pair it with an open text follow-up and you'll know the specific issue.

What to do with it: Target flows with low scores. A 2.1/5 onboarding experience is an emergency. A 4.5/5 checkout is fine. Focus your energy where the scores are lowest and the impact is highest.
